Job Requirements: Development Engineer II

This position is responsible for implementing new-to-Alkegen technologies and products for the development of non-woven products for a broad range of businesses. The Development Engineer will work under the direct supervision of the R&D Manager or Senior Engineer to research new technologies, to incorporate them into raw materials suitable for Alkegen processes, to prove out product concepts, to resolve product and process issues, to document process reliability and to develop new products. This position will also work closely with Legal, Marketing, and Manufacturing at all phases of development, commercialization, and product line enhancements.

Responsibilities:

Maintain a “Safety First” attitude in the performance of all tasks. Develop, identify, and source new-to-Alkegen technologies to deliver customer-valued product features.

Design, oversee, and perform experiments and analyze results per defined objectives. Coordinate and Lead pilot scale trials when appropriate. Supervise production trials of new and modified products.

Maintain accurate and thorough laboratory notebooks and project files. Prepare and distribute appropriate reports to document technical findings, following ISO requirements.

Coordinate freedom-to-operate searches and patent applications.

Contribute to internal and customer specs for developed products. Assist Quality Assurance in evaluating and resolving unusual, non-routine customer complaints as assigned by R&D Manager or Senior Engineer.

Work with Purchasing and Manufacturing in the evaluation of new sources of raw materials, product improvements and/or cost reductions as assigned by R&D Manager or Senior Engineer. Provide technical assistance with unusual production situations.

Must be knowledgeable in the effective use of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools and concepts to assist in process improvements, both within Lydall, and externally at our customers/suppliers. Serve as an active participant in LSS programs that promote continuous improvement.

Use project management tools when appropriate.

May represent company at Industry Technical Meetings, Trade Shows, and Conferences. May contribute to technical papers or reports at conferences and shows Develop and implement DOE’s for new product development to assure that technology is delivering the products that meets Marketing and Customers’ needs

Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, OR Paper Science OR Chemical Engineering with a strong emphasis on chemistry

  • Normal travel requirements should not exceed 20 percent

  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams within the facility as well as throughout the company

  • Ability to organize, manage, and control workflow

  • Ability to meet deadlines despite conflicting priorities

  • Proficiency with a variety of software applications, such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Office

  • Basic statistical training particularly significance testing including standard deviation, standard error, t-test and F-test, propagation of error. Design of experiments training

  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, presentation and interpersonal skills

  • Salary Range: $63,000 - $92,484.
