Here is what you will be doing
Conduct railcar and train movements; signal engineer for movement of the engine or train using lantern, hand, and/or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back up, etc.
Observe, interpret, and relay arm, lantern or radio signals and all other indications affecting movement of a train
Operate track switches (visually check switch condition and direction) to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard, customer facility or on the main line. Apply or release hand brakes to switch or perform other duties
Read and understand the rules, timetables, bulletins, train orders, waybills, placards, safety instructions, and other written or printed material (SAVAGE rules, GCOR and UTA rules)
For safety reasons, must be able to read, write and understand, and follow written and/or verbal instructions in English
Prepare required daily reports and switch lists, either manually or with a computer; fill out forms, including train orders and complete the mobile reporting of performed work in the provided inventory management system.
Inspection of all equipment to include railcars, switches, rail, and locomotives before any movement.
Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when making up trains
Perform other duties as assigned
Team members are subject to pre-employment and random federal drug testing in compliance with 49 CFR Part 219.
Team Member must pass background investigation to include: Criminal history, Driving record and Physical. And must complete training in accordance with 49 CFR 242.
Requirements of a successful Locomotive Engineer/Conductor
Capable of understanding printed, written and oral communications
Capable of recognizing colors and understand meaning of signals (color vision test required as noted in CFRs)
Capable of judging speed/distance relating objects on or around the rail
Great hand/eye coordination
Willing and capable to take actions and/or make decisions affecting/protecting the safety of others
Two years of related experience. Railroad experience preferred
Willingness/Ability to work days, nights and weekends in a work environment with exposure to outside in all weather conditions.
Here are some of the physical requirements for this role
Climb in and out of the equipment
Ascend and descend ladders and steps and should not have a fear of heights
Must be able to lift 80 lbs.
Must be able to climb on and off railcars and locomotives
Must be able to walk on ballast/uneven ground for up to 12 hours/day
Must be willing to work 12 hour rotating shifts
