NiSource Electric Asset Management Engineer/Specialist – Reliability in Merrillville, Indiana

Job Description

Position Overview:

Contribute to the development of engineering and technical specifications and applications for electrical materials, processes, methods, designs, and practices for use by NIPSCO engineers and operations personnel to improve the safety and reliability of the Electric System. Understands the principles of performance evaluation and prediction to improve material/systems safety, reliability, and maintainability. Responsible for optimizing electric asset health and performance in the NIPSCO electric plan that maximizes asset value and delivers strategic objectives through active management of NIPSCO’s electric assets’ life cycle. This includes the determination of best practices to operate, maintain, monitor/analyze asset condition, and optimize Distribution Automation asset renewal. This position will actively collaborate/participate with Planning, Engineering, Operations, Execution, Regulatory, Procurement, and Budget groups in developing and implementing NIPSCO’s long term strategic asset renewal plans.

Lead the Department in the Following Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promotes and assures safe working environment and public safety.

  • Work in conjunction with Electric Line, Electric Substation, Planning, Engineering, Budgeting, Regulatory, Legal, Operations, and other NIPSCO departments in developing regulatory filings around NIPSCO’s implementation of its long-term system plans, including TDSIC.

  • Develop and maintain NIPSCO’s asset management strategy for distribution automation, relays, asset monitors, reclosers, regulators, capacitors, communication equipment, communication towers, and other major electric assets.

  • Update and maintain distribution automation assets in NIPSCO’s enterprise asset management software programs like GIS and Cascade.

  • Monitor and evaluate industry publications to identify asset practices and trends that could benefit NIPSCO in its asset management implementation/practices.

  • Contribute in specific, cross-functional, short-term, problem-solving teams that draw on the diversity of members to improve the safety and reliability of NIPSCO’s electrical assets and processes.

  • Communicate with engineering and operating departments to confirm knowledge of standard processes, methods, designs, and practices.

  • Work a flexible schedule, including overtime, as needed to meet engineering needs.

Qualifications

Engineer I / Specialist I (0-2 years)

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Ability to read/interpret drawings/standards to analyze/solve problems

  • Understanding of risk management tools and analysis, including the development and interpretation of equipment-specific models.

  • Knowledge of electric system equipment and operation.

  • Knowledge of electric system inspections and maintenance cycles. Ability to identify equipment operating trends and make recommendations for maintenance activities.

  • Understanding of substation and line diagnostics and reliability assessments.

  • Understanding of asset management and operations support systems including Cascade, GIS, and Maximo.

  • Ability to read and interpret T&D Line and Substation Single Line Diagrams.

  • Leads multi-departmental teams to solve reliability, material, or operational issues.

Engineer lI / Specialist II (2-4years)

  • Increased understanding of risk management tools and analysis, including the development and interpretation of equipment-specific models.

  • Increased knowledge electric system equipment and operation.

  • Increased knowledge electric system inspections and maintenance cycles. Ability to identify equipment operating trends and make recommendations for maintenance activities.

  • Increased understanding of circuit diagnostics and reliability assessments.

  • Knowledge of communication systems and operation.

  • Increased understanding of asset management and operations support systems including Cascade, GIS, and Maximo.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting T&D Line and Substation Single Line Diagrams.

  • Leads multi-departmental teams to solve reliability, material, or operational issues.

Engineer III / Specialist III (4-9 years)

  • Understanding of risk management tools and analysis, including the development and interpretation of equipment-specific models.

  • Proficient in knowledge of distribution automation, substation and line equipment and operation.

  • Proficient knowledge of distribution automation equipment inspections and maintenance cycles. Ability to identify equipment operating trends and make recommendations for maintenance activities.

  • Proficient understanding of circuit diagnostics and reliability assessments.

  • Increased knowledge of communication systems and operation.

  • Proficient understanding of asset management and operations support systems including Cascade, GIS, and Maximo.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting T&D Line and Substation Single Line Diagrams.

  • Leads multi-departmental teams to solve reliability, material, or operational issues.

Desired Qualifications

  • Engineer Intern (EI) Certification

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • PMP Certification

  • Experience in the electric utility industry

  • Knowledge of generation and renewables

Senior Engineer / Senior Specialist (7-12 years)

  • All of the qualifications for Engineer III including

  • Expert knowledge of distribution automation, substation and line equipment and operation.

  • Expert knowledge of distribution automation, substation and line equipment inspections and maintenance cycles. Ability to identify equipment operating trends and make recommendations for maintenance activities.

  • Expert understanding of line diagnostics and reliability assessments.

  • Expert understanding and ability to make changes to asset management and operations support systems including Cascade, GIS, and Maximo.

  • Proficient understanding of communication systems and operation.

  • Uses advanced knowledge of Line equipment to recommend changes in materials, construction, and maintenance.

  • Recommends changes in maintenance procedures and intervals based on advanced equipment knowledge and understanding.

  • Ability to perform duties with increased latitude for un-reviewed work. Leads multi-departmental teams to solve complex reliability, material, or operational issues.

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer Licensure

  • Demonstrated leadership

  • Skilled in principles of project management

  • PMP Certification

  • Experience in the electric utility industry

  • Experience with generation and renewables

Principal Engineer (7-12 years)

  • Professional Engineer License (Required)

  • All of the qualifications for Senior Engineer

  • Identifies opportunities for equipment risk management models and then leads complex, cross-functional teams that develop long-term strategic capital replacement plans.

  • Identifies the need for changes in procedure and duration to Equipment Inspection & Maintenance Cycles and then leads complex, cross-functional teams that implement these changes.

  • Expert knowledge of communication systems and operation.

  • Represents the company on outside panels including committees such as IEEE that develop consensus industry standards.

  • Expert knowledge in NESC, NEC, and IEEE codes and standards.

  • Identifies opportunities and leads complex, cross-functional teams that update Engineering Guides and Standards.

  • Leads complex projects, including the writing, bidding, and awarding of complex bid specifications. These projects may utilize outside experts and results will have long term strategic impacts.

  • Leads, directs, and assists with the development and evaluation of personnel.

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer Licensure (Required for this position)

  • Expert in principles of project management

  • PMP Certification

Required for Selection

  • Graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university program with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering OR Engineering Technology
