The Department of Animal Science's mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension and outreach.

Work in coordination with the Farm Manager to support the daily operation of the Ithaca Farms.

The responsibilities of this position will be to serve as team member on a crew of Animal Attendants, student employees and volunteers. In the absence of the Farm Manager, the S06 Animal Attendant will be given the authority to make decisions about animal welfare, facilities emergencies, assigning tasks, adjusting schedules, and providing requested reports to faculty, if needed. Additional responsibilities will be to contribute to the health and welfare of research animals including poultry, sheep, horses, goats and cattle. Responsible for feeding, watering, monitoring health of the animals, assisting with research needs as well as maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities. Assist with vaccinations, treatment of illness and animal movement within and between animal housing units. Maintain accurate records. Cleaning and disinfect animal housing facilities. Assist in mixing of feed, animal waste removal, lawn mowing and snow plowing and minor repairs.


Regular work schedule is Friday through Tuesday, 7:30am to 4:00pm, Friday 7:30am to 3:30pm.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3 to 4 years of domestic farm animal handling and livestock husbandry experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to act in a lead capacity.
  • Knowledge of animal health issues.
  • Must demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Must be safety oriented.
  • Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions and be exposed to loud noises, dusty conditions, animal waste and odors.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours as necessary to accomplish goals.
  • The successful candidate must be personable, flexible, possess excellent communication and organizational skills and take pride in their work.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Must have and maintain a valid New York State driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AAS Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technician Degree, Animal Technician Certification.
  • Experience working in a research setting.
