University of Maryland, Baltimore Laboratory Research Technician in Baltimore, Maryland

The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicineis seeking aLaboratory Research Technicianto work within the laboratory for Dr. Prajwal Ciryam. The Ciryam Lab studies immune responses to acute brain injury in animal models and human samples, with a goal to improve diagnostics and therapeutics in traumatic brain injury and other acute diseases of the brain. The selected candidate for this research technician position will be expected to work in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment to advance ethical and rigorous scientific inquiry. The selected candidate must possess excellent communication skills, strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, independent work habits, and an eagerness to learn. A background in the biological sciences with prior bench laboratory experience is strongly preferred. The candidate's primary responsibilities will include routine biological procedures (including but not limited to gel electrophoresis, immunohistochemistry, and PCR), preparation of buffers and reagents, specimen processing, data collection and recording, review of the scientific literature, and data analysis. In addition to performing and interpreting experiments, the selected candidate will be responsible for routine laboratory maintenance, including ordering supplies, keeping records, and helping to maintain a safe and clean work area. Under direct supervision, performs routine bioanalytical, chemical, or physical tests according to standardized processes, and performs other laboratory activities and maintenance. PRIMARY DUTIES * Performs routine biological procedures such as gel electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and DNA extractions; chemical procedures such as simple synthesis, or product isolation, or biophysical procedures such as optical and kinetics measurements. * Prepares chemical solutions, media, reagents, stains, and buffers. * Assists in conducting routine assays such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and complement fixations. * Assists with sterile procedures. * Performs clinical processes such as cell or tissue cultures. * Collects, prepares, and processes specimens. * Develops and prints film detailing biochemical or other analyses. * Assists in conducting research on current scientific literature using computerized applications. * Collects, records, and enters research data. * Performs wipe tests, general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, spectrometers, and gas and liquid chromatographs. * Maintains chemicals and equipment inventory. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in a biological or chemical science. OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences; of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to use computers and related software applications; to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
