The University at Albany is hiring an Assistant Director: Health Education within the new Office of Health Promotion, which is part of the Well-Being Cluster of Student Affairs. The University is proud to be part of the first cohort of institutions in the United States to adopt the Okanagan Charter, and this new office has been tasked with leadership in guiding the implementation of the Charter as it builds a foundation for health promotion at the institution using public health approaches and a salutogenic lens.

The incumbent in this position will have a unique opportunity to help craft an institutional vision and strategy for health promotion while providing leadership and supervision of essential health education within the Office of Health Promotion.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate vision and strategy promoting health literacy and personal skill development for all 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students at UAlbany in alignment with the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and international best practices.

  • Contribute to the leadership team within the Office of Health Promotion and support the growth of the work of the entire team throughout the UAlbany community.

  • Supervise a Health Promotion Specialist and a Mental Health Promotion Specialist.

  • Provide leadership and supervision of the peer health education student groups and the peer and professional wellness coaching programs.

  • Support the iterative and participatory development and dissemination of health communications via the various venues through which students can be reached, such as social media, webpages, and on-campus messaging. In order to be continuously effective in communication, maintain awareness of and skills in current student preferences regarding communication.

  • Contribute actively to efforts promoting well-being as a campus-wide initiative, including participating in workgroups, collaborating across departments, and providing training to faculty and staff.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Update and maintain webpages related to health education and peer-facilitated programs.

  • Consult with internal and external partners on matters related to health education and coaching.

  • Facilitate trainings, workshops, and conversations with students, faculty, and staff as appropriate.

  • Build and maintain excellent interpersonal relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting agency plus four years of related work experience OR Master's degree in a relevant area from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting agency plus two years of related work experience.

  • Experience in health education, health promotion, student affairs, or higher education administration.

  • Experience working with a college or university population or with emerging adults.

  • Experience with supervision (of students, graduate students, or professional staff).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of health promotion, behavior change, and population-based theories and models.

  • Demonstrated skills in a variety of communication/education methods, including social media, web-based communication, presentations, and workshops.

  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion into all aspects of health promotion and health education work.

  • Familiarity with the Okanagan Charter.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual

  • Familiarity with the Ottawa Charter

  • Experience supervising professional staff

  • Experience providing Wellness Coaching

  • Certified Wellness Coach (CWC) or Certified Wellness & Health Coach (CWHC) Credentials

  • National Board Certification in Wellness Coaching
